Dance Motif

ORCHESIS, derived from a Greek word referring to the art of dance, is the name of the University of Alberta modern dance program, offered by U of A Campus Recreation, for dance lovers of all abilities and experience. Membership offers participants dance training and performance opportunities.

Every January, ORCHESIS members, faculty and guest artists, come together with their common passion for dance and produce the annual concert 'Dance Motif'. This performance facilitates a diversity of experience, allowing individuals the possibility of exploring ideas in a creative environment and giving experienced dancers the opportunity to continue developing their performance skills.

Every year, 'Dance Motif'  features a dynamic line-up of modern and jazz choreography by local dance artists, emerging student choreographers and guest choreographer.  The performance is held on campus at the Myer Horwitz Theatre, with two showings, Friday & Saturday evenings.

Throughout the year, technique classes are available at three levels of ability. In addition, all members are encouraged to perform in appropriately-choreographed works in Dance Motif.

ORCHESIS is open to students, alumni, and members of the community who are interested in modern and jazz dance techniques, improvising, composition, performance and participating in the technical production of Dance Motif.
